About cookies.

A “cookie” is a piece of information that is stored on your computer’s hard drive if you agree to this and which records how you move your way around a website so that, when you revisit that website, it can present tailored options based on the information stored about your last visit. Cookies can also be used to analyze traffic and for advertising and marketing purposes.

Cookies are used by nearly all websites and do not harm your system, but there are many kinds of cookies and some can be very intrusive. Depending on how they work, cookies can be classified into:

Session cookies.

These are only stored on your computer during your web session and are automatically deleted when you close your browser – they usually store an anonymous session ID allowing you to browse a website without having to log in to each page but they do not collect any personal data from your computer.

Persistent cookies.

A persistent cookie is stored as a file on your computer and it remains there when you close your web browser. The cookie can be read by the website that created it when you visit that website again.

Depending on what these cookies are used for, they can also be classified as:

Strictly necessary cookies.

These cookies are essential to enable you to use the website effectively. Without these cookies, the services available to you on my website cannot be provided.

These cookies do not gather information about you that could be used for marketing or remembering where you have been on the internet.

Performance cookies.

These cookies enable businesses to monitor and improve the performance of their website. For example, they allow them to count visits, identify traffic sources and see which parts of the site are most popular.

I do not use any performance cookies in my analytics system.

Targeting Cookies.

These cookies record your visit to a website, the pages you have visited and the links you have followed. Sites use this information to make their website and the advertising displayed on it more relevant to your interests.

I do not use any targeting cookies on my website.

Functionality cookies.

These cookies allow my website to remember your choices and provide enhanced features. For instance, to provide you with news or updates relevant to the services you use. They may also be used to provide services you have requested such as commenting on a blog.

The information these cookies collect is anonymized.

First & third-party cookies.

First-party cookies are cookies set by a website. Third-party cookies are cookies on a website that are set by another website, such as adverts or Facebook pixels so that they can show you relevant content from us when you are on Facebook.

I use only first-party cookies on this website.

I do not use any non-essential cookies on my website.

You can block cookies (including essential cookies) at any time by activating the setting on your browser that allows you to refuse the setting of all or some cookies. However, if you use your browser settings to block essential cookies you may not be able to access all or parts of my site.

Website Cookies.

Embedded Content.

I only use embedded content on my site from domains that have a “do not track” setting, such as Vimeo instead of YouTube, to ensure these websites don’t collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, or monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Contributors.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Logged in Users.

If you visit my login page, this site will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, the site will also set cookies to save your login information and your display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options ones last for a year.
If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

Comments.

If you leave a comment on my site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

You can alter your cookie preferences at any time by blocking cookies in your web browser. Please refresh your page to ensure that the new settings have taken effect.

If you have any questions about the cookies that we use, feel free to email me at privacy@mariaak.com.
